The Harbar History Harbar manufactures quality wheat flour and corn tortilla products from it's new 40,000 sq ft facility in Canton, MA, a Boston suburb. Founded in 1986 by Heidi Maria Hartung, a native of Mexico and her cousin, Harbar has grown to be New England's premier manufacturer of quality tortilla and wrap products. Heidi and her cousin, who was living in Boston at the time, felt Boston was in need of authentic tortillas. On the look out for entrepreneurial opportunities, Ms. Hartung decided to take the plunge. At 24, she had recently graduated from L'Ecole Hoteliere de Lausanne, in Switzerland, but was having trouble finding a suitable position in Mexico. Although she know plenty about eating the tasty treat, Ms. Hartung was less sure how to go about making authentic Mexican tortillas. So she decided to learn from the source. "I worked in a few tortilla factories," she explained, and she picked up what she needed to know, from making the masa to cooking the tortillas until they puff. Ms. Hartung came to Boston with more than just know-how; she brought along a Mexican tortilla machine, and she and her cousin set up shop in "a small space in Jamacia Plain," near the Boston Beer Co. brewing complex. Three moves and 17 years later, Harbar has evolved into a full line supplier for tortilla and wrap bakery products. Please take time to review our product offerings for both retail and foodservice.
